A Wheelwright's Compass or Circular Smoothing Plane
These planes were widely used by Wheelwrights, Coachbuilders and Shipwrights
amongst others.
They are also good for hollowing the back rails of chairs.
This one is 8" long with a 2 1/8" cutter. Adjustable versions allow you to
alter the circumference of the
radius by means of a sliding boxwood piece at the toe which slides up und
down in a groove, often
dovetailed, and then secured by a screw.
They are a useful addition to the workshop for many jobs and are very good
for smoothing the
inside curves of bow fronted drawers, windsor chair backs etc.
