In the 1928 Stanley No.34 catalogue it says,
"Will cut rabbets on the outside or inside of curved or straight edges." See illustration below.
The Stanley No.196 Curve Rabbet Plane is 9" long
and has two adjustable cutters, 1" wide, the upper one acting as a spur for
the lower one and also cutting the side of the rabbet. The lower skew
cutter cuts the bottom of the rabbet. There is an adjustable depth
stop and fence. It is Nickel Plated.
The special blade is set at a skew and will follow a true depth of cut for warped or curved boards.
This one was made between 1921 and 1923. It is an early Sweetheart model
with the second Sweetheart Logo and Made in USA on the Lever Cap Screw. It. The first
Sweetheart Logo appeared in 1920. The difference being that the first
one had New Britain, Conn USA under the heart. From
1923, third Sweetheart Logo, the heart is dropped down so that it's top
is resting on the bottom line of the notched oblong.
The fence and depth stop foot are tiny.
