The No.78 has two cutter seats, an adjustable fence, depth stop and spur. This is a Type 1.

The Stanley No.78 Rabbet Plane is 8-½" long and has a 1-½" wide cutter.  It is Cast Iron with a Black Japan finish.  From 1936, the length was shortened to 8-¼".

It has two cutter positions, one for regular work and one for bull nose work.

In this image, we see the Miller's "Fancy Pattern" handle found on many of Stanley's planes before the "Fish Scale" pattern of 1909.  There is no adjuster for depth of cut. This was added in 1925.  Also, it has the early style thumbscrew.

The Type 1 has two patent dates embossed under the handle, Jan. 30, 1883 & Oct 23-'83.

The Type 1 has this patent sate stamped at the top.
